Imprinted Concrete Driveway: Repair and Recolour, or Replace?
If the slab is stable, repairing and recolouring a cracked imprinted driveway gives you an even, refreshed surface without demolition, rubble or new concrete. Replacement is the right call only when the slab itself has failed: widespread sinking, large broken sections or a washed-out base. The decision rests on the condition of the slab, not on how faded the surface looks.
Send us a photo and the m²What does each option actually involve?
Repair and recolour works on the surface you already have: pressure cleaning, crack filling, rebuilding small damaged spots and edges, brush cut-in, then two coats of synthetic resin paint. The slab and its stamped pattern stay in place.
Replacement starts by breaking out the old slab and removing the rubble, then preparing the base and laying and stamping new concrete. It is building work, with everything that comes with it.
How do the two options compare side by side?
| Question | Repair and recolour | Replace |
|---|---|---|
| Is the old slab kept? | Yes | No, it is broken out |
| Demolition rubble? | None | Yes, to be managed as construction waste |
| Stamped pattern | Original pattern stays | New pattern of your choice |
| Levels and drainage | Unchanged | Can be redesigned, or changed by accident |
| Fixes sinking or a failed base? | No | Yes, if the base is rebuilt properly |
| Disruption on site | Cleaning, repair and coating | Demolition, base work, concreting |
| Who does it? | A repair contractor like us | A builder |
Neither option is better in general. Each is right for a different condition of slab.
When is repair and recolour the better choice?
When the driveway is level and solid, and its problems are faded colour, surface cracks, small chips, worn patches and tired edges. That describes many imprinted driveways on the coast that have simply spent years in strong sun.
Our Marbella reference job is a typical case: a faded, cracked grey stone-pattern driveway, carport and garage apron, cleaned, repaired and recoloured into a dark, glossy, even finish. The details are on our imprinted concrete repair page.

When is replacement the better choice?
When the slab has failed: large areas have sunk, sections rock or are broken right through, the base has washed out, or the surface is crumbling almost everywhere. Painting imprinted concrete does not cure subsidence, so recolouring a failed slab only delays the decision.
Replacement may also make sense when you want a different layout or pattern altogether. In that case, the condition of the old slab matters less than what you want the new one to be.
What about rubble and paperwork?
Replacement produces construction and demolition waste, which in Spain is regulated and has to be managed by whoever carries out the work. Repair leaves the slab in place, so there is no demolition waste.
Either kind of work may need a declaración responsable or a licence depending on the municipality and the area. Our guide on when repair is not enough sets out what we have verified and what you should confirm with your ayuntamiento.
Can you combine both approaches?
Sometimes a builder replaces one failed section, for example where a pipe trench has sunk, and the rest of a stable driveway is then repaired and recoloured. New and old concrete will look different until the whole surface shares one colour.
If you are considering this, talk to the builder first and send us photos once the new section is done. We can then repair the cracks and spalled patches on the rest and recolour the lot.
How do you decide for your own driveway?
Start with stability. If there are no steps, sinking, rocking or growing cracks, repair and recolour is very likely the sensible route. If any of those appear, check the red flags list and speak to an engineer.
Then send us photos. We will tell you whether your driveway looks like a repair job, and if it does not, we will say so. If you are abroad, your property manager can take the photos, and the whole conversation can happen in English.
Frequently asked questions
Is it better to repair or replace a cracked imprinted driveway?
If the slab is stable and the problems are fading, surface cracks and chips, repair and recolour is usually the better choice: no demolition, no rubble and the original pattern stays. If the slab is sinking, broken through or crumbling everywhere, replacement by a builder is the right answer.
Can I change the pattern if I repair instead of replacing?
No. Repair keeps the existing stamped pattern, because the slab stays in place. You can change the colour, since the whole surface is recoloured, but not the design. If you want a completely different pattern, replacement is the only way to get it.
Will a repaired imprinted driveway look new?
It will look refreshed and even, with a new uniform colour and repairs hidden under the coating. It is still the original slab and pattern, so close up you may notice the texture of repaired spots. The overall effect is a driveway that looks cared for again.
Does replacement fix a sinking driveway?
Replacement can fix it if the base is properly investigated and rebuilt as part of the work. Simply laying new concrete over a base that is still failing would lead to the same problem. An engineer can advise on what the base needs.
Is repair always less disruptive than replacement?
In general, yes. Repair involves cleaning, repairing and coating the existing surface, with no demolition, rubble or concreting. Replacement involves breaking out the old slab, removing waste, preparing the base and laying new concrete, which is a much bigger operation on a villa plot.
Do you replace imprinted concrete driveways?
No. We repair and recolour existing outdoor concrete and imprinted concrete. Replacement is building work that we do not carry out. If your driveway needs replacing, a builder is the right contractor, and we can help only once there is a stable surface to work on.
Can new and old concrete be made to match?
New and old concrete look different on their own. If a builder replaces one section of a stable driveway, recolouring the whole surface afterwards can bring old and new areas to one even colour. The stamped textures may still differ slightly up close.
Do I need a permit to replace my driveway?
Possibly. Depending on the municipality and the area, a declaración responsable or a licence may be required. In Málaga city the general rule for minor works is a declaración responsable, but other towns have not been verified, so always confirm with your ayuntamiento.
What happens to the old concrete if I replace it?
Broken-out concrete is construction and demolition waste, which in Spain is regulated and has to be managed properly. The builder doing the replacement should explain how they will handle it. Repair avoids this altogether because the slab stays where it is.
How can I tell if my imprinted driveway is stable?
Look for steps across cracks, sunken areas where water now collects, slabs that rock or sound hollow, and cracks that keep growing. If none of those apply, the slab is probably stable. If any do, ask an engineer or surveyor before deciding on repair or replacement.
Can you look at photos and tell me which option fits?
Yes. Send a wide photo of the driveway, close-ups of the cracks and any damage, and the approximate area. We will tell you whether it looks like a repair and recolour job. If it looks like replacement or an engineering question, we will tell you that too.
