What Owners Wish They Had Known Before Repairing Their Driveway
The things that surprise owners after a driveway repair are rarely about the workmanship: they are about expectations. Repairs are hidden by the recolour but not always invisible up close, the surface is out of use until the coating allows traffic, the existing pattern stays, and a repair cannot fix a slab that is sinking. Knowing these points in advance makes for a better decision and a happier result.
Send us a photo and the m²Will the repaired cracks be completely invisible?
Not always, and it is better to know this at the start. Under two coats of colour, repaired cracks are usually hard to spot from normal viewing distance, but up close a fine line can sometimes be traced, especially on textured or stamped surfaces.
We tell you after seeing your photos which cracks are likely to vanish and which may leave a trace. Our crack repair page explains why recolouring the whole area matters so much for the final look.

How long is the driveway out of use?
The honest answer is: as long as the repair materials and coating need, according to their data sheets and the weather on the day. We do not give a fixed figure, because it would not be true for every product and every season.
What matters for planning is that you know before work starts. Cars need to be parked elsewhere, deliveries rerouted, and guests in a rental warned. Planning this in advance makes the process much smoother than discovering it on the day.
For holiday lets, put the dates in the booking calendar as soon as they are agreed, so nobody is promised a parking space that is not available.
Can the pattern or layout be changed during a repair?
No. Repair works on your existing slab, so the stamped pattern, the shape of the driveway and its levels stay as they are. What changes is the condition of the surface and its colour.
If you want a different pattern or layout, that is replacement, which is building work we do not carry out. Our comparison of repair and recolour vs replacement sets out the trade-offs.
Can a repair fix a driveway that has sunk?
No, and this is the most important point of all. Painting imprinted concrete does not fix subsidence, and filling cracks over a sinking slab only hides the problem until they reopen.
Our red flags checklist helps you spot the signs before you spend anything.
Does the colour choice matter more than expected?
Often it does. Because the whole surface is recoloured, the colour you choose sets the look of the driveway, the carport and anything else in the same area.
On the Marbella job, the faded grey became a deep, glossy dark tone, which changed the whole entrance to the villa. Look at the finished photos on imprinted concrete repair and think about how the colour sits with walls, gates and planting before you decide.

Why do photos at the start matter so much?
Because nearly every surprise on site comes from something nobody saw beforehand: an old coating that is peeling under the dirt, a crack that has grown, a hole that turns out to reach the base. Good photos reduce those surprises a great deal.
- A wide photo of the whole area in daylight.
- Close-ups of every crack and hole, with something for scale.
- Edges along walls, posts and steps.
- Any area where water collects or the slab sounds hollow.
- Any old coating that is flaking.
What else is worth knowing before you book?
In a community, shared driveways and ramps usually need to go through the administrator. For some works, depending on the municipality, a declaración responsable or a licence may be needed; check with your ayuntamiento. And if you are abroad, decide early who will handle access and move vehicles.
Small holes and broken pockets are part of the same job; our pothole repair page explains how they fit in.
Frequently asked questions
What is easy to misunderstand about driveway repair?
The most common misunderstanding is expecting a repair to fix a sinking driveway. Surface repair and recolouring work on stable slabs. If the ground or base is moving, an engineer needs to look at it first. The second is expecting every repaired crack to be completely invisible up close.
Will my driveway look new after repair?
It will look refreshed, with one even new colour and repairs hidden under the coating. It is still the original slab, so the pattern and layout stay the same and very close inspection may show where cracks were repaired. Most of the visual change comes from the recolour.
Can I park on the driveway during the work?
No. The area needs to be clear for cleaning, repair and coating, and it stays out of use until the coating's data sheet allows traffic. Plan where to park in advance and warn anyone who uses the driveway, including guests and delivery drivers.
Can I change the colour of my driveway?
Yes. Because the whole surface is recoloured, you can choose a tone close to the original or something different. Think about walls, gates and planting nearby, as the colour will change the look of the whole entrance. We discuss options before the work starts.
Do I need permission to repair my driveway?
It depends on the municipality and the area. In Málaga city, repairing exterior slabs is treated as a minor work under a declaración responsable, with licences required in some areas. For other towns this has not been verified (to be verified), so confirm with your ayuntamiento before starting.
Can repair be done in stages?
It can, as long as each stage ends at a natural break, such as a step, a gate or a change of surface. Otherwise the colour line between treated and untreated areas can look odd. Doing the whole area at once usually gives the most consistent finish.
What if the repair reveals more damage?
Cleaning sometimes shows cracks or weak spots hidden under dirt. We tell you what we found and you decide whether to include it before any extra work is done. If the new findings suggest movement, we recommend an engineer instead of continuing.
How do I prepare for the repair if I'm abroad?
Decide who will provide access and move vehicles and furniture, make sure there is a water point we can use, and share the contact details of your key holder or property manager. We can then agree dates by email or WhatsApp and send photos of the progress.
Is it worth repairing before a rental season?
Often, yes, because the driveway and terraces shape the first impression of a villa. Plan the work in a gap between bookings that leaves enough time for the coating to be ready, according to its product data sheet.
What should I ask before accepting a quote?
Ask whether the whole area will be cleaned, whether cracks will be opened and repaired rather than painted over, how joints and edges will be treated, what happens if signs of movement appear, and whether you can see the product data sheets for the materials used.
What is the single best thing to do before booking?
Check for signs of movement: steps across cracks, sunken or rocking sections and cracks that grow. If there are none, send good photos for a quote. If there are, speak to an engineer first. That one check prevents the most expensive mistakes.
